Staying Fit While You Are Pregnant

All of us should really make sure that we take the time and effort to look after ourselves. This will include eating a well balanced and healthy diet, as well as getting plenty of exercise. Most people say that with the fast pace of modern life, they do not have the time. We need to make a lifestyle choice and take the time in order to help keep us fit and healthy. This is even more important if you are pregnant as suddenly you have two people to keep healthy. There is plenty that you can do though without eating like a rabbit and joining a fancy gym.

There is an old wives tale which says when you are pregnant you are eating for two, so you are okay eating extra portions. This is not true though as your body is quite capable of getting all of it nutritional requirements if you eat a balanced diet, there is no need to increase the portions massively just because you are pregnant. Rather than eat a lot of processed and pre prepared meals, you should take the time to buy fresh ingredients and make your own meals. There are thousands upon thousands of recipes available for free on the internet for all of your favourite foods cooked in a healthy way. Not including the cooking time, there are lots of different dishes that you can create from scratch within 15 to 20 minutes. This is pretty quick so there is really no excuse for saying you have no time. Try and stay away from fatty foods and additives and preservatives if at all possible. Although this does not mean you cannot enjoy your favourite foods or snacks, just enjoy them in moderation and have them as an occasional treat. You really can eat anything you want as long as you do not eat too much of it or too regularly.

Start Exercising

You will be limited somewhat as to what exercises you can do, especially during the later stages of your pregnancy. So the Sky Diving or Bungee Jumping could be ruled out, I am sorry! There are still plenty of exercises that you can do cheaply or in the comfort of your own home.

  • Cycling
  • Walking/Running
  • Yoga/Pilates
  • Swimming
  • Aerobics

If you choose to do something such as cycling, then you will need to make sure that you wear the correct protective equipment such as knee and elbow pads as well as a helmet. This also may not be advisable for someone during the later stages of their third trimester in case of accident. Walking or running is also a great form of exercise which you can do within your own neighbourhood and also at your own pace. You can even take your dog out with you if you have one and give them some much needed exercise. You may even wish to get yourself a book or DVD and do some Yoga or Aerobics in the comfort of your own living room. A lot of people are very self-conscious and this can be made worse when a woman is expecting a child depending on how comfortable she is with herself. One of the best forms of exercise though is swimming. This gives a good cardio workout and is low impact so does not stress the muscles and joints too much as your weight is supported by the water. This is also something that you can continue when you child is born and is excellent for babies. It is amazing to see their natural swimming reflexes kick into gear when they go into the pool.

Being Comfortable

You will need to make sure that you dress appropriately when you are looking to exercise. If you do a search on the internet, you will be able to purchase maternity wear online in Australia which are both suitable and very affordable. Make sure that you get something which gives you room to move and will not restrict your movement too much. Wearing comfortable footwear is also very important as well and this goes for throughout your pregnancy and not just when you are exercising. So what are you waiting for? Get up and start looking after yourself. Change your lifestyle and your unborn child for the better. Setting a good example right from the start and getting them to eat well and exercise regularly is the best start you can give you child. This will also help them to take this habit into adulthood so they can live a healthy and productive life. If you do not do it for yourself, do it for your family!
